Our Curriculum

Hampton Cove Preschool utilizes the HighScope Curriculum. HighScope is one of the only research based curriculums available for early education and emphasizes adult child interaction, a carefully designed learning environment with a daily routine, and a plan- do-review process that strengthens initiative and self-reliance in children. Teachers and students are active partners and learning is seen as an interactive growth process. By using the main components of the HighScope model, it provides us with an open framework in which we are able to create a balanced curriculum. The daily routine allows for consistency and security for the children yet the freedom within to exert control over themselves, their environment and their activities.

Beginning with the Perry Preschool Study, HighScope revolutionized early childhood education with a new approach to teaching and learning. Research based and child focused, the HighScope Curriculum uses a carefully designed process — called "active participatory learning" — to achieve powerful, positive outcomes.

As teachers, parents, and educational researchers have discovered, the HighScope Preschool Curriculum not only helps young children excel in language and cognitive learning but also promotes independence, curiosity, decision-making, cooperation, persistence, creativity, and problem solving — the fundamental skills that help determine success in adult life.

The Key Developmental Indicators of the HighScope model address each of those areas which are the basis for our curriculum. We believe in teaching the skills necessary for all aspects of school and life. Although we may use different themes to guide the children’s learning, ideas are drawn from your children’s natural curiosity.

Technology

Hampton Cove Preschool recognizes, appreciates, and is committed to the educational importance of technology use in and out of the classroom. The school supports and fosters a community of responsible digital citizens and we expect to engage our students, promote creativity, and enhance the curriculum with the use of technology.

Our mission states that Hampton Cove Preschool provides a technology rich environment to enhance the educational experience for our children. We have tablets in all of our prekindergarten classrooms that are available for use as part of our learning labs and interactive small group activities. We also utilize an interactive Smart Board in our prekindergarten classroom as part of the academic process.

Learning Labs

Hampton Cove Preschool classrooms use learning labs as an approach to student learning. Each learning lab is equipped with a variety of activities that correspond with the HighScope Key Developmental Indicators that are being taught in that classroom. Children are given ample opportunity on a daily basis to explore these labs.

Teachers work with children individually and in small groups within each learning lab. Children are also given the opportunity to work independently in the learning labs.
